Australian broadcaster 7News' YouTube channel was hijacked by crypto scammers who streamed videos featuring a deepfake of Elon Musk promoting cryptocurrency scams. The scammers rebranded the channel to appear as Tesla's official channel, with the fake Musk promising to double any cryptocurrency sent to specified addresses. At its peak, the livestreams attracted approximately 150,000 viewers, although it's unclear how many were genuine viewers versus bots used to inflate viewership numbers. Despite the hijacking, the channel retained its verification tick. Seven Network, the parent company of 7News, acknowledged the incident and stated they were collaborating with YouTube to resolve the issue promptly. YouTube confirmed they were taking steps to secure the compromised accounts after being notified by 7News. Scammers associated with the incident also operated a website soliciting Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and Dogecoin, holding over $11,000 in total across listed addresses.
