Apple Eyes AI Partnerships with OpenAI and Google to Boost iPhone Capabilities
Apr 27, 2024
Apple is reportedly seeking partnerships with Big Tech firms like OpenAI and Google to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, particularly on the iPhone. Discussions between Apple and OpenAI are reportedly underway to integrate generative AI technologies into iOS. This move comes as Apple's AI efforts have shown signs of lagging behind competitors, prompting a shift towards external partnerships. The departure of Ian Goodfellow, known as the "GANfather," from Apple's machine learning division in 2022 may have signalled this change. While Apple has released open-source large language models, they may not compete with closed models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Apple's push for AI partnerships could coincide with its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where major product announcements are typically made. This move comes as Microsoft, which partnered with OpenAI, has surged in market capitalization, outpacing Apple as the world's most valuable company.
