Binance Tax Evasion Trial Postponed to May 17 in Nigeria Amid Legal Proceedings
Apr 21, 2024
The tax evasion trial involving cryptocurrency exchange Binance and two executives, including Tigran Gambaryan, has been adjourned to May 17 in Nigeria. The delay occurred as Binance had not been formally served with the charges by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Gambaryan's lawyer objected to proceeding without Binance being served, citing Nigerian law. Binance and its executives were charged with four counts of tax evasion during a visit to Nigeria, following the government's ban on cryptocurrency channels. Gambaryan was present in court but did not enter a plea, while Nadeem Anjarwalla, another executive, had escaped detention and left the country. Apart from tax evasion charges, Binance also faces allegations of laundering over $35 million by Nigeria's anti-graft agency. Gambaryan is suing the government for violating his rights, citing his detention and passport confiscation as unconstitutional.
