Gamers are projected to spend an average of $6,425.13 on virtual items over their adult lifetime, according to a study commissioned by Unstoppable Games and conducted by OnePoll.com. The research surveyed 2,000 gamers and found that the average monthly spending on in-game purchases is $8.74, totaling $104.90 per year across three purchases. These purchases commonly include character skins, weapons, and extra lives. However, despite this expenditure, 35% of surveyed gamers feel that money spent on in-game items is wasted as they have nothing tangible to show for it, and 51% express frustration at the inability to resell or give away these virtual assets. There is growing interest in blockchain gaming, which offers potential solutions to these issues by enabling true ownership and interoperability of in-game assets across different games. However, despite the benefits, 84% of gamers have never heard of or tried blockchain games, largely due to past disappointments with early offerings in the space.
