Kenya Stands Firm: Defies US Pressure, Maintains Worldcoin Suspension
Mar 23, 2024
The Kenyan government has reportedly resisted pressure from the United States to lift its suspension on the operations of the cryptocurrency project Worldcoin. Interior Secretary Kithure Kindiki stated that Kenya would maintain the suspension, which was initially imposed in August 2023, until assurances regarding the safety and integrity of financial transactions are provided. Kindiki made these remarks during a session with the National Assembly’s Public Petitions Committee, where he disclosed that Kenya had faced pressure from the U.S. government to rescind the suspension on Worldcoin's activities. The suspension was announced by Kindiki on August 2, 2023, pending certification from relevant public agencies ensuring the absence of risks to Kenyan citizens.
