Navigating the Pitfalls of Political Correctness: Elon Musk's Insights on AI Bias and Truth-Seeking
May 24, 2024
Elon Musk, during his speech at Viva Tech Paris 2024, expressed concerns about potential biases in contemporary artificial intelligence (AI) systems, particularly emphasise the issue of political correctness. He highlighted an example involving Google's Gemini AI, which faced criticism for its response regarding misgendering Caitlyn Jenner. Musk warned about the dangers of training AI to be deceptive, citing instances like the controversial AI image generator incident in February. To address these concerns, Musk established xAI in July 2023, aiming to develop AI systems that prioritise truth-seeking and curiosity. While xAI is still catching up to giants like Google DeepMind and OpenAI, Musk anticipates its competitiveness by the end of 2024. He emphasised the importance of truth-seeking capabilities in AI, as well as the need for caution in its development, aligning with the sentiments expressed in an open letter signed by over 2,600 tech experts calling for a pause on AI development due to potential risks to society.
