Nayib Bukele's Bold Victory Claim: El Salvador's President Seizes Landslide Win, Awaits Official Verdict
Feb 5, 2024
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has declared himself the winner of the national elections, claiming to have captured more than 85% of the vote and asserting that his New Ideas party secured a significant majority in the legislative assembly. However, official electoral results have not yet been released, and electoral officials have not commented on the outcome. An exit poll by CID Gallup indicated strong support for Bukele with 87%. If confirmed, this victory would mark his re-election, making him the first Salvadoran president in nearly a century to achieve this. Bukele's popularity has been linked to his security strategy, which led to a significant reduction in nationwide murder rates but also raised concerns about the mass incarceration of a portion of the population.
