Open Libra: Crafting a Community-Driven Blockchain Aligned with Humanist Values
May 23, 2024
Open Libra is a blockchain platform that aims to create a permissionless, open-source environment aligned with humanist values. Initially derived from Facebook's Libra project, Open Libra is on a mission to develop a blockchain platform without succumbing to the demands of venture capitalists. Led by contributors like Zaki Manian, the project was initiated around three years ago to build a community-driven, open-source blockchain that prioritises long-term vision over short-term financial returns. Notably, the project operates without VC funding, allowing it to focus on sustainable growth and development. Around 80% of the network is held in community slow wallets, with a significant portion controlled by not-for-profits like the Danish Red Cross. The community plays a crucial role in shaping the project's direction and use cases, with ownership of assets equated to having a vote in decision-making processes. The goal is to create an asset widely aligned with humanist goals and valued by a diverse range of people over time.
