Phishing Scammer Returns $9.3M in Dai to Victim After 10 Months
Jul 16, 2024
In a surprising twist, a victim of a phishing scam in September 2023 recently received a substantial portion of their stolen funds back. The scammer returned nearly $9.3 million in Dai stablecoin across two transactions, as reported by Etherscan data. This return comes almost 10 months after the victim lost $24.2 million in Ethereum-based tokens during the initial attack. The scam involved the victim inadvertently approving token transfers to the scammer, enabling the theft. The recent repayment, equivalent to about 38.4% of the stolen amount based on September 2023 prices, was initiated with an on-chain message from the scammer expressing a desire to return the funds.
