Pune Trader's Cryptocurrency Catastrophe: Unravelling the Web of Deception
Apr 3, 2024
A 22-year-old Pune resident fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam, losing Rs 2.5 lakh from his wallet after downloading an app suggested by a potential employer he met online. Naved Alam, a product designer and cryptocurrency trader, recounted his ordeal on social media, explaining that he was contacted by a Twitter user named 'cranky bugatti' for a design role related to a web3 communication app called 'SocialSpectra.' Despite initial discussions appearing legitimate, Alam was directed to download an internal communication app for a call, which turned out to be spyware that emptied his cryptocurrency wallet of $3000. Alam warned others to be cautious online and urged verification of employment offers before downloading anything, emphasising that professionals like designers and developers are often targeted by fraudsters. The incident occurred on March 30, and while Alam demanded repayment from the fraudster, the individual denied involvement in the scam.
