Support for Binance Founder CZ as Prison Term Begins: Plans for Future Involvement in Cryptocurrency
Jun 1, 2024
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has commenced his four-month prison sentence at Lompoc prison in California, as confirmed by his legal team at Latham and Watkins. The crypto community has shown support for Zhao during this time, with some members viewing his sentence as a protective measure for Binance. Despite his incarceration, Zhao intends to maintain his involvement in cryptocurrency upon completion of his sentence, focusing on passive investing and holding his existing cryptocurrency holdings. He emphasised the importance of regulatory compliance in the crypto industry moving forward. Zhao's prison term stems from charges related to money laundering at Binance, for which he apologised and accepted responsibility. As part of the resolution of a multiyear investigation into Binance, Zhao resigned as CEO and agreed to pay a $50 million fine, significantly less than the initial three-year prison term recommended by federal prosecutors.
