BitFlyer Acquires FTX Japan, Eyes Launch of Japan's First Crypto ETFs

BitFlyer Holdings has acquired FTX Japan, making it a wholly owned subsidiary, with plans to launch the first cryptocurrency-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Japan. This acquisition aims to enhance BitFlyer's offerings, particularly in providing secure crypto custody solutions for institutional investors. Yuzo Kano, CEO of BitFlyer Holdings, emphasised the need for robust security technology to safely store Bitcoin, which will serve as the underlying asset for these ETFs. The move is seen as a significant step toward introducing crypto ETFs in Japan, following similar trends in the United States where institutional investment in Bitcoin has surged since the launch of Bitcoin ETFs. Additionally, Franklin Templeton is partnering with SBI Holdings to establish a new crypto ETF management company, potentially launching the first spot crypto ETF in Japan, further indicating a growing interest and regulatory evolution in the Japanese digital asset market.
