MicroStrategy X Hack: Unveiling the Ethereum Token Scam Saga

On February 25th, 2024, the official MicroStrategy X account was compromised by hackers who proceeded to promote a fraudulent Ethereum-based token, $MSTR, through a fake airdrop scheme. The attackers posted malicious links that redirected users to a counterfeit MicroStrategy webpage, prompting them to connect their wallets and claim the purported airdrop. By granting permissions to their Web3 wallets, users unwittingly exposed themselves to token theft, allowing the attackers to drain their funds. Independent investigations by blockchain analyst ZachXBT and anti-scam platform Scam Sniffer revealed that losses from the scam surpassed $440,000. In a particularly notable instance, one user fell victim to the phishing scam mere minutes after the initial malicious link was posted, losing a staggering $424,786 in altcoins. Notably, funds from this attack were not only directed to the primary attacker but also rerouted to a second wallet associated with the PinkDrainer hacking group.
